Advanced Level Workshop Offerings:

1) “Leading Between The Lines”TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2015 – West Lawn UMC, 15 Woodside Ave., Reading, PA – 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.   A workshop created by The Rev. David Woolverton, Sr. Pastor of St. Mark’s UMC, Mount Joy, is all about applying family systems principles to your personal life in order to impact your leadership, ministry and church. We will explore eight issues that make pastoral leaders cross boundaries, as well as how to define yourself around leadership and personal values. Bring your Bible, too, as we explore “best practices” for accessing “Axios” (a Greek word meaning “worthy”) in enhancing overall effectiveness in ministry, respect of “personal space,” and leading within healthy boundaries. This workshop will be held from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and will be led by The Rev. David Woolverton and The Rev. Misty Fuller. The fee for the workshop is $30 per person and includes continental breakfast starting at 8:30 AM, lunch, and course materials. This workshop will satisfy the quadrennial requirement of sexual ethics. A 0.5 CEU certificate will be issued at the completion of the workshop. REGISTER ONLINE at www.epaumc.org (log in with your user name and password, go to “Events,” then “Advanced Sexual Ethics,” then select the workshop, then click on “More Information,” then “register now.”) Contact person: David Woolverton – shepherd2842@comcast.net or 717-653-5493.

2) “A Preacher and a Shrink Talk about Sexual Ethics”FRIDAY, APRIL 24, 2015 – 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM – Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, PA, 17545

Pastor Rob Timlin, M.Div., THM, and licensed psychologist, Curt Nicholson, PhD, both of Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, have conspired to present a day’s lecture and discussion integrating the theological and psychological underpinnings of Christian sexual ethics into a deeper and more practical intellectual and experiential framework. We hope to empower participants to be more richly and deeply aware of the vagaries and resources in their own sensuality and thus better lead the flock in these areas as well. We will discuss: worshipful living versus idolatry, the eternal and the temporal, personal and interpersonal human sensuality, boundaries and power differentials, the Scripture and sexuality and the effects of what goes on inside our heads and our hearts. The fee for the workshop is $30 per person and includes continental breakfast starting at 9:00 AM, lunch, and course materials.

3) “Healthy Sexuality and Embodiment in the Practices of Ministry”TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2015 – 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM – West Lawn UMC, 15 Woodside Ave., West Lawn (Reading), PA.

Ministry is an embodied profession. What we do with our bodies and the ways in which we express our sexuality have profound impacts on our ministerial effectiveness and integrity. In this workshop, we will discuss sexual ethics for ministry in a holistic way, including both healthy boundaries and healthy sexuality for ministerial leaders. Topics include sexual health and integrity, fiduciary duty, erotic attunement, self-care, and specific practices of ministry, such as mission, evangelism, preaching, worship, and pastoral care. Workshop leader, the Rev. Darryl W. Stephens, PhD, is Director of United Methodist Studies at Lancaster Theological Seminary, an ordained Deacon in the Texas Annual Conference, holds a PhD in Christian Ethics from Emory University, former Assistant General Secretary for Advocacy and Sexual Ethics at the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women in the UMC, a former faculty member of Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and is a nationally sought-after speaker and consultant. This workshop is based on his book, Professional Sexual Ethics: A Holistic Ministry Approach (Fortress, 2013). Participants are strongly encouraged (but not required) to read this book (Cokesbury.com is currently offering a 30% discount) in conjunction with the workshop. The fee for the workshop is $30 per person and includes continental breakfast starting at 9:00 AM, lunch, and course materials.

4) “Sexual Infidelity Among Clergy Members:  Understanding Risk Factors and Prevention from an Attachment Framework.” – NOVEMBER 2015 – DATE TO BE DETERMINED, West Lawn UMC, 15 Woodside Ave, West Lawn (Reading), PA – 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.   Attachment is the bonding process that God designed to build closeness in humans.  Attachment begins in infancy as a survival necessity, but continues into our adult lives and closest adult relationships.  Emotional sharing, vulnerability, and touch are key components of the adult attachment bond which help build intimate relationships in adults.  When clergy members have their attachment needs met in healthy ways they are less likely to engage in boundary crossings or boundary violations with their parishioners.  This workshop will educate clergy and lay leaders about the wonderful attachment design that God has created for their fulfillment in relationships, and will focus them on meeting those needs in healthy relationships.  Attachment needs assessment and self-care strategies will be offered for both married and single clergy alike. Workshop facilitator, Dr. Jesse Gill, Psy.D., is a Christian psychologist who has worked at Psychological Health Affiliates in Lancaster, PA, for the past 12 years. He has been greatly enriched in his work integrating Scripture with Attachment Theory, and applying it to marital therapy.  He is finishing up his book, Face to Face: Seven Keys to a Secure Marriage and speaks regularly on the subject.  Dr. Gill and his wife April are in leadership together at their church, and are enjoying the experience of creating secure attachment in their marriage and in parenting.
